LANGKAWI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the opening of the St Regis Langkawi hotel is part of a bigger strategy to put Langkawi on the world map.
He said while the Government has successfully opened Langkawi as a tourist destination, particularly in terms of mass tourism and at the intermediate level, it still has not managed to bring in up-market tourists to the island.
“When we are able to bring up-market tourists to Langkawi, we can generate more revenue and provide more high-paying jobs, especially for the locals.
“We will also get demand for handicraft and local produce, and create a shopping hub here.
“So there will be a multiplier effect, including expanding Langkawi’s connectivity with the world," he said after a tour of the St Regis Langkawi here Sunday.
Among those accompanying Najib during the tour were Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, Rajawali Group chairman and chief executive officer Tan Sri Peter Sondakh and Rajawali Group senior vice-president of hotel operations Erhard Hotter.
The grand opening on Sunday night will be graced by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah and the Prime Minister.
The resort, nestled on the Jewel of Kedah’s southern tip, is owned by Integrated Nautical Resort Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between Rajawali Group and the Ministry of Finance.
