Six Bangladeshi nationals were charged in court on Friday (27 May) for allegedly providing, collecting and possessing money for terrorist purposes, the first to be charged under an Act to suppress terrorism financing.

The six were among the group of eight Bangladeshi nationals   detained   under the   Internal   Security   Act   last month.   The eight allegedly plotted to commit terror attacks and assassinations in Bangladesh in order to establish an Islamic state.
They were charged in court for providing and/or collecting property for terrorist purposes under Section 4(a) of the Terrorism (Suppression of Financing) Act, Chapter 325 (“TSOFA”). They are: Rahman Mizanur, 31; Mamun Leakot Ali, 29;  Miah Rubel, 26; Zzaman Daulat, 34; Md Jabath Kysar Haje Norul Islam Sowdagar, 30; Sohel Hawlader, 29.
Two of the six - Miah and Md Jabath - were also charged for possession of property for terrorist purposes under section 5 of the same Act.
Mamun is claiming trial to one charge. He, like the rest of the accused, were accompanied by officers from the Gurkha contingent into court.

When asked by District Judge Christopher Goh why he is claiming trial, Mamun said that could not remember if he had passed the S$500 stipulated in the charge to Rahman for the purpose of facilitating terrorism in Bangladesh.

“I’ve given him money before. I have given him more than S$500 but I never instructed him to pay the money to any (terrorist group) on my behalf,” said Mamun, who was later carried out of the docks by two Gurkha officers.
The other five accused pleaded guilty to their respective charges and will be brought back to court on Tuesday (31 May) to be sentenced. No bail was granted to all of the accused.

At about 2 pm, three armoured vehicles, accompanied by a few other police vehicles, were seen entering the State Courts compound. Security was tight with heavily clad officers from the Gurkha contingent armed with automatic rifles seen in the car park entrance of the courts.

Having age-friendly workplace

Why age-friendly workplace environment are important ?

Clearing tables was once very taxing for Mr Raymond Ong.

He had to make repeated trips to the kitchen because balancing a mound of trays was a tall order.

But since he joined restaurant Lawry's The Prime Rib two months ago, the 67-year-old has had a light trolley to collect dishes and cutlery.

"It makes it easier for me to work, which I want to keep doing as long as I am healthy, so that I am not a burden on my family," he said.

Mr Ong is the oldest of Lawry's 13 mature workers aged 50 and older, who form one-fifth of its staff. In 2013, it had just three such workers.

Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say commended Lawry's for being an "early adopter" of job redesign for older workers, ahead of legislation to raise the re-employment age from 65 to 67 in July next year.

Speaking to reporters after a visit to the restaurant yesterday, he said: "We are encouraged that more and more companies are, like Lawry's, aware of the importance, the need to make workplaces age-friendly."

But the awareness is not widespread enough, prompting Mr Lim to announcethe WorkPro scheme will be enhanced to better support job redesign for mature workers.
Starting from July this year, a company can apply for up to $300,000 in grants to fund job redesign projects targeted at workers aged 50 and older. The amount is twice the funding available previously.

Mr Lim said adopting better ways need not be grand measures. Just as valuable are "small ideas that mean a lot to mature workers".

Lawry's director Kevin Koh said the restaurant hopes to tap the enhanced WorkPro Job Redesign Grant to improve its e-menu system that allows its waiters and kitchen staff to use iPads to take and fulfil customers' orders.

The trial project has raised efficiency by 30 per cent, he estimated, and there are plans to improve it further to include age-friendly elements, such as a zoom function on the mobile devices for those who do not see too well.

Mr Koh, 45, said Lawry's struggled to fill vacancies in the past: "With this labour shortage, we realised we needed to tap these mature workers."

To make the work less physically strenuous on older employees, the restaurant has automated processes such as knife sharpening and dishwashing. Attendance is also taken with a fingerprint detector, to spare workers the need to remember to take their ID cards to work.
Lawry's offers flexible work schedules and has appointed younger staff as Silver Work Mentors, whom older workers can turn to for help.

Cook Patricia Leong, 60, said she appreciates the company for letting her take two weeks off during the Dragon Boat Festival to make some money fulfilling orders for dumplings from family and friends.

Labour MP Patrick Tay, NTUC's assistant secretary-general, gave a "loud call-out" to firms to redesign jobs for the aging workforce. His Facebook post follows yesterday's announcements of bigger grants for firms to redesign jobs, and recommendations for bosses to, among other things, give higher payouts to workers they cannot re-employ.

Said Mr Tay: "Workers (in particular low-wage workers) should not have their pay reduced when re-employed beyond 62, especially if they are still doing the same job with the same load."

He added: "Singapore as a society should also be more receptive and accepting of older workers."

Indonesian Government Asked To Reconsider Decision To Stop Sending Maids To Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has requested that the Indonesian government reconsider its decision to stop supplying maids to Malaysia. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there are still room for both countries to discuss the matter. "I believe the Indonesian government should reconsider their decision.. I was only informed about this through the media. "I need to obtain details of these new terms, especially if the minimum wage stated is different from what we have agreed upon before," he told the media after officiating the Rapat Alumni Nusantara conference today. Zahid said he would also invite Indonesia’s Minister of Manpower and Transmigration Muhammad Hanif Dhakiri to discuss further the subject of supplying foreign workers to Malaysia. "I has been discussing the matter informally with the Indonesian ambassador in Malaysia. If we have time, I will invite Haniff to negotiate on this.," he said, adding that if the need arises, Malaysia would seek a meeting with Indonesian president Joko Widodo

Worker May Get Pay Rise This Year

PUBLISHED
MAY 26, 2016, 5:00 AM SGT

Low-wage workers could be set for another round of pay hikes this year.

The National Wages Council (NWC) is expected to announce next week a recommendation to give low-wage workers a minimum pay rise. Its recommendation is currently being considered by the Government and, if accepted, will kick in on July 1.

This continues a push started by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) in 2012 to lift the salaries of low-wage workers.

That year, the NTUC lobbied for a $50 pay hike for workers earning a basic monthly salary of up to $1,000. The NWC backed the move, which the Government subsequently accepted. It was the first time in nearly 30 years that the council specified a minimum dollar amount to increase workers' salaries.

The council continued in the same vein for three more years, raising the minimum built-in pay increase to $60 in 2013. It proposed $60 increases for low-wage workers in 2014 and last year as well. Last year, it also raised the salary bar to $1,100.

MARKET REALITIES

It will be harder to get employers' buy-in when the economy is down and workers are being retrenched.

MR DAVID LEONG, managing director of human resource firm People Worldwide Consulting, warning that minimum wage hikes cannot become "an annual routine".

When the latest round of wage talks started in March this year, unionists continued to push for a minimum "quantitative" pay hike for low-wage workers similar to the levels in previous years, a source said.

Labour chief Chan Chun Sing yesterday declined to comment on NTUC's position in the wage talks.

"I will give my comment when the recommendations are announced," said the NTUC secretary-general. "The NWC (announcement) is coming out next week."
The 18-member NWC is made up of a chairman, six NTUC unionists, six representatives from employer groups, and five public-sector officials. It meets every year between March and May to set wage guidelines for companies.
It has not been revealed how big the latest hike might be. But even if the Government accepts its recommendation, it is not binding.
Only about six in 10 private-sector employers gave low-wage workers earning up to $1,000 the minimum pay hike of $60 in 2014, Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say told Parliament in January.
He added that the proportion of Singaporeans and permanent residents earning a basic monthly salary of up to $1,000 from full-time work shrunk from 9.8 per cent in 2012 to 6.8 per cent in 2014.
A source said there is concern whether the council will back a fifth round of pay hikes for low-wage workers this year because employers are worried about wage costs at a time when the economic outlook is bleak.
Council chairman Peter Seah hinted last year that the annual wage hikes could end, saying the NWC will carry out annual reviews on whether to continue recommending a fixed quantum.

Mr David Leong, managing director of human resource firm People Worldwide Consulting, said the four rounds of minimum wage hikes recommended by the council have improved the lives of low-wage workers. "It was through the sheer force of the NTUC that it happened," he said.
But he warned that the hikes cannot become "an annual routine".
"It will be harder to get employers' buy-in when the economy is down and workers are being retrenched," he said.

Interview Tips

Prepare as far in advance as possible. Do your research. Find out about the organization through their website, their social media pages and their press. Get a feel for their brand and how you may fit in with their strategy. If you know anyone who works within the organization, speak to them to get a feeling for what it is like to work for the organization.
Push for as much information as possible regarding your interview and who will be present. It can be intimidating if you are only expecting one person, only to find three. If you know the name of the person or people who will be interviewing you, try googling them and also putting their information into linked in. Their job titles should give you some insight into the type of interview you can expect. i.e.  If you are being interviewed by a technical person, you can expect some technical questions.
Write down some common interview questions and
try to prepare answers that relate to the information you have gleaned through your research, you can impress your interviewer with your knowledge of their culture, brand and challenges.

Be prepared to look your very best. This includes shiny shoes, a haircut (if necessary), well ironed clothes and a smile.
Make sure you know exactly how you are getting to your interview, how much time it will take and prepare for contingencies such as traffic jams and Friday prayers. It is much better to arrive with time for a drink at a nearby cafe and a few deep breaths before the interview, than to arrive late, totally frazzled due to bad traffic. Print out a copy of the job specification and have that with you so that you can read it before you go into your interview. Just as you should not be late, don’t turn up too early. You should aim to arrive exactly 5 minutes before the interview is due to start, not too early and definitely not late.

If you are feeling nervous, take some deep breaths. Your interviewer will be expecting some nerves so don’t worry too much. Hopefully they will be an experienced interview who can put you at ease.
If you need to think about an answer don’t be scared to do so. You may even like to say, “I need to think about that”, pause, gather your thoughts and then give your answer. You don’t have to answer questions immediately and if you are really nervous, you may like to ensure you are not speaking too quickly.

Write down some questions you would like to ask in relation to the organization / role. It is important to ask questions in an interview as these show you are interested. You should prepare a minimum of five questions before the discussion. You may also like to ask your interview “what’s it like to work here”?
At the end of the interview you may like to ask “do you think I can do the job”? Or “can you see me fitting in with your organization” this will give the interviewer an opportunity to clarify any doubts they may have.
Don’t forget to thank the interviewer for their time and ask for when you can expect to hear back from them. You may also like to say something positive such as “I have enjoyed our discussion enormously, I can see myself fitting in with your organization and I hope to receive a positive response from you”.
If they say they will come back to you on Monday. You may like to say “I look forward to hearing from you on Monday, if I don’t hear anything by Wednesday is it okay if I call you”?
Don’t forget to send a thank you note after the interview. This should be a very brief note stating “thank you very much for your time today; it was a pleasure meeting you. I would like to restate my interest in the role and I look forward to hearing from you on Monday, as discussed”.
